February 7th, 2023

1. What is gorilla trekking?

Gorilla trekking is an activity that allows you to explore the forests of Uganda, and observe the incredible mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. It can be a physically demanding experience as it involves walking through dense forests and steep terrain. The experience is worth every effort – seeing these creatures up close will remain with you forever.

2. Why are mountain gorillas endangered?

The survival of mountain gorillas is at risk due to a number of threats, particularly the destruction of their natural habitats, poaching, and the spread of disease. As human beings encroach upon their homes, resources become fewer and there is less room for them to find shelter.

Poachers also hunt these animals for their fur or capture them in order to use or sell them as exotic pets. Diseases spread by humans can also have fatal consequences on mountain gorillas. Conservation efforts have slowed down this decline, but more must be done if we want to prevent extinction. The good news? Due to protection and high entrance fees into the natural reserve the population is increasing at the moment.

Currently estimates claim that more than 1.000 gorillas are still living in Rwanda, Uganda and the DCR.

3. Where are the best destinations for gorilla trekking safaris?

There are only three countries in the world where you can find mountain gorillas: Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Uganda is supposed to be the best destination to see mountain gorillas in the wild. Why so? Uganda offers the perfect combination between political stability and affordable prices.

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, in Uganda, has 17 gorilla groups making it the best place in the world for a close encounter with these magnificent creatures. As of 2021, Uganda boasts more than 50% of the gorilla population in the whole world.

Furthermore, Uganda combines affordable gorilla trekking with political stability. In Rwanda, prices range much higher than in Uganda, whereas Congo offers a cheaper price, but sadly is politically unstable.

4. When is the best time to book a gorilla trekking tour?

While gorilla trekking tours are available all year, you're more likely to experience wet conditions during certain seasons. The best time to plan your gorilla trek is in the dry season, which runs from December to February and June to September.

During these months, you're more likely to have a clear view of the gorillas since there's less vegetation to obstruct your view. The temperatures are also much cooler during this period.

5. How much does gorilla trekking cost?

Gorilla permits in Uganda are fairly cheap compared to other countries. Still, the gorilla permits come with a hefty price tag and cost 700$ for international travelers. (Status: year 2023) This includes the park entrance fee, ranger guide fees, and transport to and from Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

A Gorilla permit is required if your plan on going near these critically endangered mountain gorillas. This fee helps sustain their habitat as well so that future generations will also have access to safe wildlife tours.

6. And what about the other countries?

In Rwanda gorilla permits prices are fixed at $1500 per entry. You can spot mountain gorillas in Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park.

In Congo, gorilla permits cost $400 per person but watch out many areas are not safe to travel to.

7. How long does it take to get a permit for gorilla trekking?

In Uganda, gorilla trekking permits can be purchased two to three months before your tour. But it's best to book them as early as possible so that you don't miss out on the opportunity to witness these majestic creatures in their natural habitat. Especially in high season, it's recommended to book permits as early as possible.

You can get the permits through travel agents who specialize in gorilla trekking tours. Tourilla Tours can easily arrange permits for you, your friends or your family.

8. What should I wear for a gorilla trekking trip?

The terrain in the jungle can be quite tricky, so you should wear sturdy shoes with good grip. Other than that, you should pack light rain gear and a hat to protect from direct sunlight.

When trekking through wet terrains, long pants are recommended since they’re easier to pull up and down when needed. A lightweight jacket or sweater is also advisable for colder mornings and evenings. Avoid anything too bright that could alarm the gorillas.

9. Am I guaranteed to encounter mountain gorillas?

Disclaimer: No safari or trek is ever 100% guaranteed, as nature cannot be controlled. That said, we've always seen gorillas on our treks, and haven't ever heard of a group being so unlucky as to not see some. The park sends out trackers before anyone embarks on their trek. These trackers are in contact with your guide via radio and GPS, which means you'll know you're heading in the right direction to locate gorillas!

As mentioned, a gorilla trek takes you to see a gorilla troop, which is their family unit. This means you're likely to see a variety of mountain gorillas, including some adorable infants!

10. Do I need to be fit for mountain gorilla trekking?

Gorilla trekking in Uganda is not for the faint of heart! You'll need to be relatively fit and able to hike up steep slopes with mud and rain. It's not necessary to have a high level of fitness, but you should be able to walk on uneven terrain and carry your gear.

And lastly… Don't forget that gorilla trekking requires patience! Although gorilla sightings are almost guaranteed if the weather cooperates, you may still have to wait quite sometime before encountering a troop. Keep calm and enjoy the day as best you can - it will all be worth.

11. How long can I stay with the mountain gorillas?

In order to protect the wellbeing of these animals, visitors should maintain a minimum distance of several meters and stay with them for no more than one hour. You will see time flies by while watching the beautiful mountain gorillas.

12. Is gorilla trekking in Uganda dangerous?

If you take the appropriate precautions and conduct yourself responsibly, gorilla trekking is safe. It is important, however, to be aware of the inherent risks associated with any wildlife encounter and to follow the guidelines and recommendations of the tour operator and local authorities to minimize potential risks.

A major risk associated with gorilla trekking is the transmission of human diseases to gorillas, as they are highly susceptible to diseases that are common in humans, but deadly to gorillas.

Since gorillas are generally peaceful and avoid confrontation, there is little risk that you will be injured by them. You must follow the guidelines set by the tour operator and the park authorities, which may include staying a certain distance and making no sudden movements near the gorillas.

Overall, gorilla trekking is a safe and unforgettable experience.
